Motion sensor not detection motion in Ring Alarm

Ring is mostly known for its well-known doorbell, but the fact is that they make a wide range of other smart home products such as Ring Motion Sensors and Ring alarms which confirms Ring is competing in its league.

Ring Alarm motion detector is made to increase your home protection and safety. Ring also manufactures freeze and flood sensors in addition to motion and touch sensors.

When motion is detected in the range of installed devices, this sensor may carry out several actions, such as turning on the lights or notifying you of a security situation.

The two-part Ring contact sensor is intended to be mounted on windows or doors. When the two components of a contact sensor are split apart, they can set off sirens, notify the authorities in your area, and notify you.

The functionalities are awesome, but often the machine falters in doing its job, and that’s what we are talking about here in this article- Ring Alarm Motion Sensor Not Working.

If this is a problem plaguing you as well, stick around as we are going to get to the roots of the issues and also find the steps to troubleshoot it:

Reasons Why Ring Alarm Motion Sensor Not Working?

The most common reasons include disabled motion alerts, insufficient power supply, outdated firmware and hardware issues.

Read about the causes in detail to know more, or jump to the next section to directly know the troubleshooting methods:

Motion Alerts is Disabled

While we are to find the causes for motion sensors not working, we will start with the settings first. You ought to ensure that the device is not set up on settings that are making the device act contrary to your expectation.

Go to the Ring application on your smartphone and check if the motion alerts are disabled.

It’s pretty obvious that if the motion sensors are disabled, your sensors are working, but you are getting the impression that they are not because you are getting no alerts.

Also, if you have an alarm system installed, you would want to receive those alerts. So, quickly check that and apply the fix.

Fault With Power Supply

Secondly, make sure the power run device gets enough power. Your motion detector is powered by a battery that enables its infrared technology to protect your house.

The Ring alarm’s motion sensors could not function due to dead, damaged or corrosive batteries.

Normally, a battery of Ring alarms is intended to last for around three years. Batteries can deteriorate more quickly if subjected to high or low temperatures, physical harm, or if you just received an outdated battery with your gadget.

It is also possible that a battery has moved out of its proper spot if you just bought your system, so before embarking on replacing them instantly, you can refix them.

Have a spare battery on ready to examine any problematic gadgets. This enables you to eliminate a dead battery as a potential reason rapidly and keeps you ready for when those batteries do fail.

However, it can be time for new batteries if they are worn out or you’ve owned your system for around quite a long.

Memory Cache is Full

Don’t forget to check the cache data for your device in the Ring app. It would be best if you constantly cleared the cache memory of the Applications, which keeps building over time.

It can also contain corrupted files, sometimes resulting in your device not performing certain tasks, so make sure to see whether your memory cache is cleared or not, by navigating to the Ring application to ascertain the cause.

Firmware is Not Updated

ring software update

Gadget companies timely release updates for their products for the device to keep functionally optimally and to eliminate any bugs found in the subsequent device usage and experiments by the company.

This is even more true for smart devices, which rely heavily on a piece of software to operate. Users need to update their device firmware when the company releases them quickly.

If you are a Ring alarm holder, then your sensors may not work because you skipped the firmware update notification.

If you miss the notification, your system is potentially infected with a bug or just facing minor glitches due to outdated firmware.

Problem With Hardware Component

Hardware component problem in Ring

The Ring Alarm system is not a singular compact unit but composed of numerous components. Your house cannot be secure and safe by the force of features and functionalities of Ring security gadgets until every component is operating correctly.

Even the home base and range extender must both be operational for the motion sensor in your Ring alarm system to work.

It’s completely valid to think that some other hardware component of your system isn’t operating properly. So, you should check the device and its peripherals to look for any physical damage.

Alternatively, the battery, the software, or even the Ring app are unrelated to your Ring sensors issue. They could be related to a device’s internal hardware issue as users can’t truly address ring hardware issues.

However, using the warranty may swap your Ring devices before purchasing new ones. All devices protected by the Ring Protect Plus and Pro subscriptions even have their warranties extended.

If your Ring alarm is still quite new, you could return it to the store from where you bought it and get a new replacement.

How To Fix Ring Alarm Motion Sensor Not Working?

Fix A Ring Alarm Motion Sensor Not Working

Now that we have worked out the possible reasons, and I suppose you have found the one culprit for your issue, its time to fix them:

Ensure Sensor in Not Muted in Ring App

Before we start to fix the problem, we have to make sure all the settings are right. So, I suggest you quickly go to the settings corner in the Ring application and enable the motion alerts because there’s no point in your motion sensor working and you not receiving any notifications.

After you have enabled the motion alerts in the app, and still your problem is as it is, you can move to the next step.

Update Ring Firmware

The second step is to upgrade the firmware of the device. Make sure you always use the latest versions of Ring firmware to get the most out of your Ring gadget’s experience.

When Ring releases updates, a notification will appear at the top of the Home Icon Home in the Ring App. This is whenever the latest firmware version is ready.

To update the firmware, only touch “Update now” on the notification card. Note that you must turn on the phone’s Bluetooth and that your Ring’s remaining battery must be greater than half the battery capacity for the firmware upgrade to succeed.

Move Ring Motion Sensor Close To Ring Alarm Base Station

The third fix is to move the ring alarm motion sensor closer to the Ring security system base station. Now, if you ask if it is feasible to use your Ring motion sensors across locations, you may relocate your device between any Locations.

However, Ring Alarm devices cannot be added to a location or transferred between base stations at various Locations without a base station.

For an extra tip, I have included the trick to remove the adhesive off a Ring alarm which is used to mount the device to its location.

The trick is using a hair dryer. Start it at the lowest temperature. After that, hold it 6 to 8 inches apart from the glue, being careful not to melt the sensor. You should be able to dispose of the glue and dismount the sensor after a little while.

It might be fixed on a wall or put on a flat structure. If you wish to use an Ethernet connection, ensure it is close to your router or in a location with good wi-fi coverage.

Install in a location where the alarms may be heard throughout the area.

Factory Reset Ring Alarm

Resetting the device is the final option left in my list of this troubleshooting guide is you if you are still battling the issue. Different models of Ring sensors have different methods of resetting the device.

Here, I talk about the resetting method for the second generation of motion sensors.

In this new model, Ring has added a special button that we can click to reset the Ring alarm, so it’s neither inherently simpler nor more challenging.

Here are the steps for factory restoring a Ring sensor to its default factory settings:

  1. Take off your Ring sensor’s cover.
  2. Search for the reset button.
  3. Use a paper clip or other pointed tool and press the reset button.
  4. Keep firmly pressing the button until the light turns green.
  5. Hold the button down until the LED light changes to red.
  6. Mount the cover back again.

Final Thoughts

Is the ring alarm motion sensor not working? Don’t worry; we’re here to help. This post teaches you how to fix your Ring alarm motion sensor quickly and easily.

  • First, check the battery in your Ring alarm motion sensor. If it’s low or dead, replace it with a new one.
  • If the battery is good, try moving the sensor closer to the door or window it’s supposed to protect. The closer the sensor is to the protected area, the more accurately it will detect movement.
  •  If neither of those solutions fixes the problem, something may block the signal between the sensor and the base station. Check for anything obstructing their line of sight (like furniture) and move them as needed.
