We can never underestimate the need for electrical power in today’s world. Most home essentials like lighting, cellphones, refrigerators, cookers, blenders, to laptops, require some charging or current.

However, emergencies due to natural disasters like storms and power outages can happen anytime.

It is, therefore, essential to have a yeti 1400 portable solar generator to power your electrical appliances in the event you find yourself in such unwarranted situations.

You will also find portable solar generators highly essential during outdoor activities like camping wherein, in most circumstances, you lack access to an electricity supply.

A great option to address your power needs during emergencies and outdoor activities is the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium.

Goal Zero has built a strong reputation for the manufacture of high-quality solar generators, and the Yeti 1400 is no exception.

This model is considered one of the most innovative and highly versatile solar generators in the market.

Please keep reading to find out more about the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium and why it’s different from other portable solar generators.

Features and Specifications of Goal Zero Yeti 1400 Lithium

Design and Durability

The Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium is quite large compared to other solar generators in the market. It weighs 45 pounds. I found it quite heavy to lift, but the large metal handles, which are lime green in color, made it easier for me to move it around.

Altogether, the unit measures 15.3 by 10.4 by 10.1 inches. Despite its large size, it has a similar design to other solar generators. This solar generator features dark colors throwing in contrasting silver-grey in certain parts.

The black-grey enclosure carries the battery pack. This plastic covering ensures it is more durable than those of other models that I have tested.

You, therefore, don’t have to worry about the Yeti 1400 getting damaged by harsh weather conditions when you are using it outdoors.

I also loved the rubber feet that have a remarkable ability to withstand any impact from the ground. Also, it comes with long-lasting plastic rigged bumpers that offer protection on all corners.

On its outer surface, the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium features multiple power ports. On its right side, it contains two 120V AC outlets. It also includes four 2.4 A USB ports as well as a 12V electrical port like the one found in cars.

There is also a big backlit LCD that gives you essential information that you may need when using the battery. It tells you how much power is remaining in the battery, the amount of time left before the battery gets empty, how much power has been put in, and the estimated power output when you have connected your devices.

This information comes in handy to help you know how to ration the power available responsibly.

Overall, I think that Goal Zero 1400 lithium highlights great symmetry, is subtly colored, and has a beautiful classic design.

Battery

The model packs a potent lithium-ion battery, and the manufacturer has incorporated all the safety features to ensure that it doesn’t destroy your devices or blow up.

The lithium battery is way better than that of the Yeti 1250, which is a lead-acid battery. The Goal Zero Yeti 1400 battery also doesn’t produce any dangerous gases when you as using it.

It is much lighter and features more life cycles.

The battery has a capacity of 1425 watts, powerful enough for larger devices like refrigerators.

As mentioned earlier in this review, the battery is enclosed in a waterproof enclosure to prevent it from getting damaged by outdoor elements.

I was significantly impressed by the battery management system from Texas instruments. This offers maximum battery protection to stop it from shortcutting, overcharging, and excessive current flow.

For example, in case you connect a device that requires too much power, the battery management system immediately shuts down the power supply to ensure the solar generator doesn’t get damaged.

Goal zero has also fitted a cooling system cleverly in this model to ensure that it remains cool in all environments at the same time functioning optimally.

Charging [Three way]

The manufacturer gives you three different options for charging the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium battery.

The first option is through your regular wall socket, which happened to be the easiest way as I was testing.

Goal Zero includes a small charger to use for this function when the battery gets depleted. It will take around 25 hours for the battery to charge up to one hundred percent. However, I found this slightly too long for such a high-end solar generator.

The second option is charging the battery through direct sun rays. You can use solar panels from Goal Zero or buy from other brands.

How fast the battery gets charged depends on how much direct sun you get as well as the number of solar panels that you have.

For instance, when you use a single boulder 100w panel by Goal Zero, it takes you between 32 hours and 34 hours to get the battery fully charged when it is 0% depending on how intense the sun rays are and how directly they can access it.

On the other hand, when you use six boulders 100 panels from Goal Zero, it can take around six hours for the battery to charge fully. Under perfect sunlight conditions, it takes only 4.5 hours.

It is also worth mentioning that boulder 100 panels that Goal Zero recommends for this model are monocrystalline and feature a robust anodized frame, which ensures that they do not break when being used outside.

They are also covered with tempered glass to make it easier to fix them in hard-to-reach areas.

In case you are not a fan of solar panels, you can charge the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium battery using the cigarette lighter in your car through a chargeable adapter.

How fast the battery charges using this option depends on the alternator and your vehicle as well.

It takes about half the time as your AC outlet for the battery to go from 0% to 100% when using this charging method.

Inverter

Source-Goal Zero

If there is one thing I love about Goal Zero, it is the fact that they always use quality parts on their portable solar generator units.

The Goal Zero Yeti 1400 comes with a 1500 watt pure sine inverter. It brings forth a 3000 watts peak value, which is recommended for such a generator. This peak value is double that of a gas generator.

This is what makes it possible for users to run heavy-duty items with massive power surges like refrigerators, microwaves, televisions, medical devices, and pumps.

Since the inverter is pure sine, the Yeti 1400 has no problem running a gadget that uses 1500 watts and below.

WIFI connectivity

This is another feature that sets the Yeti 1400 from other portable solar generators. You can wirelessly connect single or several devices through WIFI and monitor how the Yeti 1400 works.

I downloaded the Yeti App from the Google Play store to try out this feature. The app is also available on iTunes.

Also, it is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. As mentioned earlier, you can view handy information about the power unit, such as the battery level and the amount of power – pretty cool, right.

What’s more, you can use the Goal Zero Yeti app to put off the ports conveniently. You will find this feature particularly fascinating if you own an RV and your Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium is located in a hard-to-reach area.

Moreover, during an unprecedented power outage, you can comfortably check the status of the battery using the Yeti app from your living room in case you have set up the unit in your garage.

What I like

I find the Goal Zero app a timeless addition to this model. You can conveniently monitor the battery unit using your phone as well as the ports.

The app is readily available on the play store app as well as iTunes, so you can quickly download it to your phone. It is an ultra-modern alternative to traditional gas generators.

It doesn’t produce any fumes or noise when it is operating. This makes it a safe option for using at home to power your devices during an emergency outage. The numerous outlets make it possible for you to power several devices at the same time.

The Goal Zero Yeti 1400 is also an ideal option to use during camping activities such as boating, picnics, camping, and you can also carry it to a construction site.

The battery has a waterproof covering, so you don’t have to worry about the unit getting damaged when you take it with you to outdoor areas.

Another great feature that I loved about this portable solar generator is the battery management system that adequately protects the battery from overcharging, short-circuiting, and overcurrent.

What I don’t Like

The high price of this Yeti model certainly makes this device a piece of a luxury item.

Although the price of the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 is a bit on the high end, its remarkable features do compensate for this.

You can keep all your essentials running whenever you don’t have electricity with the Goal Zero Yeti 1400.
